Boabdil, whose real name was Muhammad XII, was the last sultan of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and one of the most melancholic and fascinating figures in Spanish history. His life marked the end of an era: the Islamic presence on the Iberian Peninsula, which had lasted almost 800 years. Boabdil, known to Christians as "El Chico" (The Younger) and to his subjects as Az-Zughbi (the Unfortunate), was the last monarch of the Nasrid dynasty. His reign was marked by internal civil war, pressure from the Catholic Monarchs, and the inevitable fall of the last Muslim stronghold in Al-Andalus. Popular culture has immortalized Boabdil through the legend of the Moor's Sigh. It is said that, as he left the city after its surrender, he stopped on a hill to look at the Alhambra one last time and wept. According to the story, his mother, Sultana Aixa, reproached him:

"Weep like a woman for what you could not defend like a man."

Although it is an iconic phrase, modern historians consider it a literary myth created later to dramatize his figure.
