Sais are traditional weapons originating in Okinawa, Japan, although they are believed to have influences from other Asian regions such as China and India. They are best known for their use in martial arts such as Kobudo and Ninjutsu. A sai is a type of metal dagger with three points:
The central point is straight (traditionally non-cutting) and is the main part of the weapon. On either side of the central point are two curved lateral points called yoku, which extend forward and sometimes slightly outward, forming a sort of trident. The handle (tsuka) is long, often wrapped to improve grip, and ends in a pointed lower part called a tsukagashira, which can also be used as a weapon.
Sais are not designed for cutting, but rather for:
Blocking and trapping weapons, especially swords and staffs.
Disarming an opponent using yoku.
Strikes with the point, handle, or lower end.
Throwing, although this is less common in traditional combat.
Martial artists typically use two sais at a time, one in each hand, although a third is sometimes carried on the back or belt as a backup weapon.
Sais are said to have evolved from agricultural tools used by peasants, although this is disputed by some historians. Over time, they became defensive weapons used by Okinawan police officers to maintain order without killing.
