In the Thiers guild and trademark system, each knife maker/craftsman had a registered number or symbol to guarantee the authorship and quality of their blades. The number 74 was the distinctive mark of Mondière (specifically associated with Forges Mondière and its various family branches).
It is very common to find antique knives (especially Laguiole-type knives or utility knives) that simply have the number 74 or the inscription 74 Mondière stamped on the ricasso of the blade. It is important to note that in Thiers, knife-making families were often closely intertwined.
Many manufacturers, including Saint Joanis, could use blades forged by Mondière (marked with 74) and then perform the fine assembly, handle fitting, and final polishing themselves. Their pieces typically had a 74 engraved deep in the steel, sometimes accompanied by a small symbol (such as a star or a crown) depending on the exact period of the registration (19th or early 20th century).
Today, this registration number belongs to the historical heritage of Thiers. Since Forges Mondière ceased industrial activity in 1984, the number 74 is no longer used in modern mass production, making pieces marked with this number collector's items that certify a blade forged in the heart of Thiers' industrial zone. Important: This is a second-hand piece, from a private collection. Exactly the same one you see in the photos.
