The Puntilla (the final blow)
Purpose: This is the final act to finish off the bull and end its agony when it is already down or dying in the arena after the bullfight and the descabello (the killing blow), if the latter was also insufficient.
Instrument: A short tool with a wide blade, called a puntilla (or sometimes a "cachete" or "verduguillo corto," depending on the technique), is used.
Technique: It is applied by a subaltern, known as the "puntillero," who approaches the fallen bull and inserts the puntilla into the back of its neck with a sharp blow ("a cachete") or with a precise insertion ("de ballestina") to reach the spinal cord and cause paralysis and definitive death.
In short, the descabello is performed with the bull still standing using a sword with a butt, while the puntilla is applied to the already fallen bull with a shorter weapon to finish it off. Both seek the same final objective: to hasten the animal's death when the main thrust has not been effective.
