Tool reproducing the famous Otzi (Iceman) knife found in the Ötzal Alps in 1991 at an altitude of 3,200 metres and which has been one of the greatest discoveries in the history of the human species. What was initially thought to be a relatively recent corpse would turn out to be the oldest wet mummy of a human being ever found. No less than 5,300 years old. Initially it was thought that he was an accident-prone mountaineer, but later studies, including carbon-14 dating, revealed that he died around 3255 BC. More than 70 personal objects were found next to his body, providing valuable information about life in the Neolithic.
Ötzi belonged to the Homo sapiens species and was approximately 46 years old at the time of his death. His health was affected by a number of problems, including tooth decay, arthritis and other traumas, as well as more than 60 tattoos that may have been part of pain treatments. His last meal consisted of ibex, grains and plants, and he is believed to have died in the spring. The cause of his death was initially misinterpreted; he was found to have an arrowhead in his shoulder and multiple wounds, suggesting he was murdered. DNA analysis revealed he had type O blood and was lactose intolerant, and was related to modern-day inhabitants of Corsica and Sardinia. The mystery of why his belongings were not taken remains unsolved. Click Play to view the Video.
