Carl Schlieper Stahlwarenfabrik & Export was originally a company that started in 1754 or 1798 and was based in Remscheid, Germany. Products included knives, tools, and razors. Markets included the thriving tobacco and rubber plantation industry in Siam (Thailand), Malaya, British North Borneo, and the Dutch East Indies. A subsidiary of the company in Solingen dealt in knives including slide joints, snap knives, gardeners, daggers, hunting, machetes, bowies, razors, and kitchen knives. Various trademarks have been used and the company has 22 patents. In the US, the brands have included "Fan", "Jim Bowie" and "El Gallo" and, after World War II, the well-known "Eye Brand". In 1989 Schlieper merged with Remscheider. Carl Schlieper was declared bankrupt in 1993. Freidrich Olbertz resumed production of the brand in Solingen. The company is known for its "Eye Brand" knives.
