Friedr. Herder Apr. Sohn has been manufacturing knives, razors, scissors and tools for a wide variety of areas since 1727. Traditional manufacturing techniques combined with constant development bring his products to the highest quality and long lasting utility.
Herder knives and pocket knives are, and have been, very popular in the Netherlands. The oldest of the Herders, Jurgen Herder, made swords in 1623, and from 1650 also utility knives which were sold mainly in the Netherlands, and from there to the East Indies, etc. A couple of well-known names (in order of "commonality", in the Netherlands, IMO): Friedr. Herder Apr. Sohn (ace of spades), Rich. A. Herder (ace of diamonds), H. Herder (ace of spades in a box), Herder & Sohn (diogenes), Robert Herder (windmill). All these manufacturers of traditional German work and/or kitchen knives.
Herder has made a wide variety of blades, from razors to daggers for the Waffen SS.
Peter Herder was the man who registered in Pilghausen, Germany, the well-known image rights for the ace of spades "Messmachergerichts" which started the company on February 27, 1727.
The company has been marketing products since 1841 under the name “Friedrich Herder Abr. Son». Friedrich Herder died in 1887, after which the company continued within the family. The name Herder always remained the trading name of the company, in addition to the German market, it initially also exported heavily to Holland and Belgium and later also to the Dutch East Indies and other overseas colonies. The company went bankrupt in 1993 and was restarted under the new name "Friedrich Herder Abraham Sohn GmbH" and is located in the city of Solingen.
