Lourens Prinsloo made his first knife in 1992, shortly after attending a knife-making course with Owen Wood. Just two years later, in 1998, he became a member of the Southern African Cutlers' Guild. Before retiring in 2016, Lourens taught engineering, graphic design, carpentry and metalworking. These combined skills helped him greatly with the various challenges he encountered when creating his knives. His main objective is to make men's knives, especially with various closures and locks. Prinsloo uses a wide variety of steels, including his own mosaic damascus, which he forges himself at his home in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Lourens developed his mosaic damask, well known in the cutlers' guild.
