German Officer's Field Cutlery Kit (Hobo Kit), a highly ingenious piece of military engineering manufactured by Mann & Federlein in Solingen. This cutlery features a patented system under the German Military Engineering Directive (D.R.G.M.) that allows the spoon and fork to securely snap into or onto the knife handle using spring pressure.
Functionality: As you can see in your photo, the design allows the entire set to fold compactly for storage in the leather sheath, preventing the pieces from moving or making noise (military noise discipline).
This set is a classic from the Great War (1914-1918). While not always standard issue for enlisted men (who typically carried simpler, one-piece cutlery), it was extremely popular among officers and non-commissioned officers, who often purchased their own high-quality equipment from Solingen.
Set Components, includes:
Main Knife: With high-strength steel blades.
Detachable Spoon and Fork: Designed with that characteristic notch at the base to "anchor" them to the knife handle.
Corkscrew: A common extra in officer's sets.
Original Leather Sheath: A highly valuable item for collectors, as they tended to rot or be lost over time.
Solingen: Being manufactured by Mann, the quality of the steel is superior to contemporary copies.
Condition: The dark patina is normal for carbon steel. Do not attempt to polish it with abrasive machines, as this will diminish its historical value. A gentle cleaning with mineral oil is sufficient to stop any traces of active rust.
This is an authentic piece of German militaria and an excellent example of why the D.R.G.M. registration was so important: it protected such practical designs that, even today, more than 100 years later, they still look modern and functional.
