The gemstone on the handle of this knife is actually a section of petrified bone from a sauropod, one that lived 150 million years ago. Sauropods were very large four-legged creatures with elephant-sized feet and long necks and tails. We commonly refer to them as brontosaurus. Known to have been amphibians, these herbivores roamed the savannahs, swamps, and marshes of the southwestern Mesozoic in search of herbs and succulents at the height of the age of the dinosaurs.

Today we find only the occasional remains of these great creatures. Fortunately for us, some of his bones were quickly covered by mud and sand after death, causing them to turn to rock. The bone marrow in the cell cavities was replaced by fine particles in the sediment that covers them, which were then depleted to form the colors and patterns seen in the handle material.

This particular fossil was found in the Shinarump Member of the Chinle Formation in the Four Corners area of northwestern New Mexico. The age of the bone was determined by reference to the well-defined strata in which it was found.

We only have a limited amount of this petrified bone. and little prospect of getting more. Our specimen is not valuable or unique, nor is its ornamental use considered a loss to the scientific community; there are many sauropod bone fragments available for study. Accept its use as a handling material in the spirit that we offer it: as a tangible reminder of the mysterious animals that ruled the world at the dawn of time.
