Woodman's Pal

The Woodman’s Pal was introduced in 1941 by Frederick Ehrsam, an engineer, artist and land management expert. His vision was to create an all-in-one tool for land management, replacing multiple clearing and pruning tools.

The Ultimate Multi-Tool. Thanks to its lightweight, balanced and compact design, the Woodman’s Pal has been adopted by farmers, horticulturists and land management professionals. It is ideal for cutting, pruning, clearing paths, clearing and thinning vegetation, making it a must-have for outdoor activities.

Initially patented for civilian use, the Woodman’s Pal caught the attention of the US Army during World War II. It was acquired by the US Army Signal Corps and became standard survival equipment for soldiers in the Pacific.

Rigorous Military Quality Standards. To ensure its durability, the Woodman’s Pal blade was put through an extreme test: 7,000 impacts against an oak beam and a final clean cut test on a 5/16″ diameter maple dowel. These tests ensured its durability and effectiveness in combat and survival.

Presence in Military Conflicts

More than 250,000 units were used until the end of the Korean War. In the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, it was distributed primarily to military pilots as a survival tool, proving its reliability over generations.

In 1995, Skyline Toolworks acquired the Woodman’s Pal brand and in 1999 licensed manufacturing to Pro Tool Industries. However, competition from Chinese manufacturers copying the design forced Pro Tool to cut costs, sacrificing quality. In 2018, the company closed, liquidating its remaining inventory at low prices.

Skyline Toolworks decided to rescue this American icon, bringing back its artisanal quality and 100% USA production. Today, the Woodman’s Pal features handcrafted wooden handles, hand-stitched leather sheaths, and high-quality powder-coated steel blades.

From 1941 to today, the Woodman’s Pal is back stronger than ever, maintaining its legacy and improving upon its original design.
