The R. Zafrilla firm of Albacete belongs to one of the most traditional and historic cutlery families in the city of Albacete, Spain, where knife and blade making is a centuries-old and deeply rooted craft.
Since the late 19th century, several families in Albacete dedicated themselves to cutlery making, producing knives, blades, and other types of metal blades. At that time, the cutlery sector was beginning to move away from entirely handcrafted production and incorporate more industrialized techniques without losing its artisanal identity. Among these families was the Zafrilla family, considered one of the most prestigious and a leading continuation of the Albacete cutlery tradition.
Ricardo Zafrilla González is documented as one of the first cutlers in the family, with pieces signed “R. Zafrilla / Albacete.” Joaquín Zafrilla González, Ricardo's brother, was also a notable figure in the craft. Around 1938, Ricardo Zafrilla Martínez (likely Joaquín's nephew) entered the scene, continuing production under the name "R. Zafrilla." In the mid-20th century, other family members, such as José, Enrique, and Ricardo Valero Zafrilla, continued the knife-making business, maintaining the surname as their hallmark.
R. Zafrilla knives and pocketknives combine traditional artisanal techniques with production methods typical of Albacete cutlery workshops of the 20th century. They are known for their carbon steel or stainless steel blades, traditional springs (such as the so-called "tile spring"), alpaca bolsters, and horn or bone handles—all typical features of classic Albacete cutlery.
