This Naniwa Dressing Stone is a Nagura type aluminum oxide stone (preparation stone for sharpening and creating "slurry") and also a cleaning stone for any water stone. When you sharpen your knives, you will find that the surfaces of the stone become dirty due to metal filings, which are removed from the blades during the sharpening process. In addition to making your stones not look their best, chip buildup will slow down the sharpening action. It is best to sharpen on a clean stone. You can use a Dressin Stone to achieve a clean surface, with your Naniwa Super Stone, you will not remove material, only what is necessary. This is where a Dressing Stone comes in: to keep your stones looking their best between lapping.
You will need to soak your Naniwa Dressing Stine before using it.
